1914/15 Star named LIEUT M TODD L’POOL R, British War & Victory Medals named CAPT M TODD. Comes with two large family albums with lots of photos of Murray in uniform on horseback etc and details of the families Todd & Pilkington and various newspaper cuttings etc. A very nice set of records.
Murray Todd is connected to the famous Pilkington Glass St Helens family and the Todd Bros Chain Works St Helens family. He was born in 1877 the Son of Hdden William Todd and Eleanor Pilkington (daughter of William Pilkington). He was educated at Liverpool College in Shaw Street from 1890 to 1898. In 1903 he became a 2nd Lt in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion The Kings (Liverpool Regiment). Murray married Mary Bracker in 1905. In 1901 as a Captain he resigned his commission this time in the 6th (Rifle) Battalion The Kings (Liverpool Regiment) as he took over the running of Todd Bros in 1910 when he uncle Charles Todd died. The business hugely expanded.
When WW1 started he was called back to the Colours and became a 2nd Lt. He landed with the B Comapny 1/6th Battalion The Kings (Liverpool Regiment) on 29th Feb 1915 and took part in the defence of Hill 60 at Ypres with the Cheshire Regiment. He was made a Lt in May 1915. By now he was 38 years old and because of his knowledge of Transport he was transferred to the Army General Head Quarters as a Railway Transport Officer with the rank of Captain in Sept 1915. He stayed in the Transport section till 2nd March 1917 when he was sent back to the UK in ill health and was discharged with a Silver War Badge in March 1918.
He went back to Todd Bros and with his brothers saw the firm through the 1920 slump and 1930s and then the 1940s war work which expanded the company. Murray retired in 1947 and his Son William Hadden Todd took over.
Murray retired to Kings Gap Court, Holylake and died on 6th April 1960 aged 83 years old.
