A sad 1914 Trio to a soldier who started with the East Surrey Regt and then transferred to the Border Regt and was killed at the famous Battle of Cambrai.1914 Star (missing bar) named L-10891 PTE F T HOLLAND 1/E SURR R.British War & Victory Medals named 10891 PTE F T HOLLAND E SURR R.Full service papers available. Frank Thomas Holland was born in Thorton Heath,Croydon 1892 and was abandoned by his parents into the local workhouse. Luckily his grandmother adopted him and took him out.He was given a trade as by the age of 21 he was a blacksmith when war broke out. He joined in June 1914 with the 1st East Surrey, then the 3rd and finally sent out to France with the 1st Batt 26th October 1914. He arrived in time to join the First Battle of Ypres. He was also present at the Second Battle of Ypres – Hill 60 (Huge Mines denotated under the germans)and was Wounded in Action Gun Shot Wound to Hand on 5th May 1915 when Hill 60 was retaken by the Germans.With his wound he was sent back to England and stayed there until November 1915 when he was posted to the 3rd Border Regt. He was transferred to the 1st Border Regt and sent to Alexandria 24th November 1915. Looks like he caught Enteritis and spent time in hospital until December 1915. He was transferred to the 6th Border Regt out in Egypt. He arrived back in the UK on 15th January 1917 and stayed there until May 1917. On 4th May 1917 he arrived in France with the 6th Battalion and was present at the Battle of Messines, Battle of the Langemarck, Battle of Polygon Wood and the Battle of Broodseinde.On 5th October 1917 he was transferred to the 1st Border Regt ready for the famous Battle of Cambrai with the tanks. It was here on the opening day 20th November 1917 that Frank was killed in action.
