Staff Sgt Bell was attached to the Scots Guards during the Falklands War and was in the Reece Platoon Section No.2 Section as confirmed in the presentation of the Scots Guards Mount Tumbledown battle by Lt Col K Gorman. The Reece Platoon staged a diversionary attack on the southern flank of the mount to draw the Argentinian fire on them away from the main attack. On 9th June this operation came to a dramatic end, in the late afternoon they came under mortar and small arms fire. It also appeared the Argentines where moving ground forces to attack them. Sgt Allum gave the order to withdraw but they were under intense mortar fire and Sgt Allum and two others were wounded. A helicopter from Battalion HQ was sent to extract them and Staff Sgt Bell (APTC) guided the helicopter in with his torch and the casualties were evacuated direct to the field hospital at Ajax Bay. The Reece Troop were guided thorough a mine field by Capt Scott and then were picked up by the Blues and Royals in their Scorpions and returned to Bluff Cove.
During the evacuation of the Recce Troop, artillery engaged enemy positions on Mount Harriet. In the account of these operations, the Commander of 5 Infantry Brigade state the information from the 2 SG Patrol was the best intelligence received by the Brigade throughout the campaign. He valued particularly the indication the enemy were deployed to meet a threat from the South and along the track running from Bluff Cove to Stanley.
