Joseph Copeland Newton born in 1885 in Barrow-in-Furness but lived in Manchester. He enlisted into the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment and was in India in 1911. When WW1 started he landed with them on the 10th Sept 1914. On the 20th Oct 1914 he was killed in action aged 29 years old at the Battle of Armentières and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium.
