BWM Pte Morter 1st & 2nd KIA 28/3/1918 Esssex Regt

British War Medal named 20821 PTE H J MORTER ESSEX R.

Herbert John Morter was born in Great Melton, Norfolk in 1898. He originally joined the Norfolk Regt numbered 16535 but was transferred to the Essex Regiment numbered 20821 and landed in the Balkans with the 1st battalion on 9th Oct 1915. He would have taken part in the Gallipoli campaign till Jan 1916 when they were moved to Egypt and then sent to France 16th March 1916. At some time he joined the 2nd battalion and it was during the German big push in March 1918 that he was listed as missing on the 28th March 1918 and then later on presumed as dead. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial aged 20 years old and the Son of William and Rose Morter.
