British War & Victory Medals named 60555 PTE S FURLEY R W FUS.Samuel was born in Oldham and was formerly in the ASC numbered 228369. When WW1 started he had transferred to the 17th Royal Welsh Fusiliers.At the start of the Battle of Ypres 31st July 1917 when the battalion left the trenches to attack Steenbeck, Samuel was killed in action aged 21 part of 334 other rank and 16 officer casualties on that fateful day.He is buried at Menin Gate, Son of William and Elizabeth Furley, 20 Douglas St, Oldham.
