George was from Withington when he enlisted into the 7th Manchester Regt numbered 3412 and was sent to Gallipoli landing on 18th Aug 1915 before being evacuated in late Dec 1915. He was sent to Egypt and took part in the Battle of Romani before being dispatched back to France landing in Mar 1917. It was in France that George was awarded an MM under his new number 276020 in the London Gazette dated 13th Mar 1919for the Battle of Amiens.
