Ernest Hawkins is in fact was Joseph Ernest Hawkins born in Marlow, Buckinghamshire in Jan 1897, the Son of Joseph and Selina Hawkins. He was a Carpenter in the 1911 Census and called just Ernest in the 1901 Census. When WW1 came he enlisted into the 1st Worcestershire Regiment numbered 37594 and after training he was sent to France. At some stage he transferred to the 10th Battalion.
The 10th Battalion were in trenches at St Eloi, Belgium, Ypres on the 18th Sept 1917 and on the 20th Sept they attacked the Germans on all fronts at 5.40am, all objectives were taken but at a heavy price. 1 officer killed, 6 officers wounded, 20 other ranks killed, 95 wounded and 28 missing, unfortunately Ernest was one of those killed in action on this day and he is buried at Duhallow Advanced Dressing Station Military Cemetery, Belgium.
